Lort Smith is the busiest animal hospital in Australia, seeing more than 25,000 animals each year for services ranging from vaccinations to orthopaedic surgery. Founded by Louisa Lort Smith in 1836, the hospital is passionately committed to caring for the animals of poor and disadvantaged people.
When designing any invitation, a key element is to ensure the feel of the collateral (be it printed or digital) matches the feel of the event. In other words, there is no point in producing a muted colour, elegantly crafted invitation for a pink-loving, Legally-Blonde-adjacent teenager.
The Lort Smith birthday celebration was to be held in a supporter’s house and pretty gardens. A morning tea event to thank the hospital’s animal-loving donors and friends for their support, and to outline plans for the future.
The first concept featured brightly-coloured illustrations of dogs, cats, parrots and rabbits. As much as the team liked the vibrancy of the parrot in particular, it’s quite rare they treat pet birds in the hospital (although there has been a shark once, and even a baby elephant). The feedback was to focus more on dogs and cats, with maybe a rabbit. In addition, seeing as the event was to be held in a garden, some flower illustrations were added to reflect the flavour of a morning tea garden party.
Initially the typeface chosen was highly decorative, with dramatic thin and thick weights. Keeping the audience in mind, we changed this to a sharp, almost editorial typeface that erred less on the side of flourishes and more on elegance.
A cream background softened the overall look and mint-coloured envelopes were chosen to stand out in the recipient’s letterboxes.

In corporate event branding, you’re often working with a company’s brand guidelines.

Have you ever heard ‘Change a logo by 10% and then you can legally use it’? We take a look at 2 examples involving Taylor Swift and Tabasco and explain why this is a myth.

Whatever the brief is, it’s exactly the same. Every project. Every time. Every design. It‘s just one word.

It’s that time of year when we start looking forward to the end of the working year, changes in the seasons, and celebrations over the New year…

Sometimes it can be hard to think of Christmas Cards (especially when the holiday season is months away). So we present a few ideas to get your creative minds sparking…

For the 2024 President’s Dinner event at State Library Victoria, we created two visual concepts.
This is the concept that didn’t make the cut, and we share some of the additional printing and finishing details.
