Brand Guidelines are a recipe book

The WordPress Melbourne User Group is a collective of clever WordPress gurus that recently staged a blitz of website creation in just 24 hours for four very worthy local not for profit organisations. Brand By Name was thrilled to join the group of designers, programmers and content creators for PressJam.
Our chosen Not-for-profit (NFP) organisation was Lentil as Anything, a charity with three cafes across Melbourne. Lentil as Anything customers pay only what they can afford for a vegetarian meal, enabling those with limited funds the chance to enjoy a great meal that might otherwise be beyond their means.
Lentil as Anything also run a catering business, but there was minimal information available on the website, and the main contact points were the already busy chefs. There was an urgent need for a website that:
– showed examples of typical food;
– where they were located;
– how the ordering process worked.
Lastly, they wanted an online form where potential buyers could supply information to the chef before getting in touch by phone. This in turn helped the chef to understand the type of catering required, and cut down on their time spent on phone calls.
The final website highlighted the key service offerings of the catering business and outlined its link to the charity with a simple, elegant and easy to navigate site that otherwise not be possible for a worthy NFP with limited funds.

When a client asks for a change you think is going to look awful, you can try to talk them out of it. Sometimes, you end up sounding defensive, even if you’re not meaning to.
I’ve kept this magazine article since 1993, and now I know why. On the cover, Jeff Kennett (the Victorian Premier at the time) stood naked, addressing a crowd of people. My eyes were telling me one thing. My brain was telling me it couldn’t be true.
