President’s Dinner – an unchosen concept

The Blue Bird Café is located in Lockhart, a small rural town near the New South Wales/ Victoria border. Historically significant, its new owners wanted a new identity that referenced its long history (the café has been running continually since 1908).
Using the sign-writing traditions of the previous decades as a starting point, we wore out our HB pencils sketching various letterforms till we found one which felt ‘right’.
The new owners are lovingly renovating the cafe to ensure it continues to be a welcome stop for locals and tourists alike. If you’re ever on a road trip in the area, be sure to say hello to Roger and Louise, the café’s new owners.
For the 2024 President’s Dinner event at State Library Victoria, we created two visual concepts.
This is the concept that didn’t make the cut, and we share some of the additional printing and finishing details.
